Why We Prefer Multi-Unit Abutments?

Multi-unit abutments are significantly more expensive than regular stock abutments. In some cases, they can cost many times more than standard abutments.

However, they make the prosthetic phase much better and allow the use of retrievable screw-retained prostheses.

For this reason, at YOUR DENTIST Advanced Dental & Maxillo-Facial Centre, Vijayawada, multi-unit abutments are used for almost every implant case, including:

  • Full mouth implant cases

  • Sectional implant cases

  • Two-implant cases

For single implant cases, a titanium base (Ti-base) is generally used instead of multi-unit abutments.

In many full-mouth implant treatments, implants are intentionally tilted to increase their load-bearing capacity.

Tilted implants can withstand significant functional load.

In treatments such as All-on-4, implants are often tilted at angles between 30° and 45°.

Because implants are tilted, multi-unit abutments become very important.

They help in maintaining prosthetic parallelism. Multi-unit abutments are available in different angulations such as:

  • 10°

  • 15°

  • 20°

  • 25°

  • 30°

These angled abutments help compensate for implant tilt and make the prosthetic setup more predictable.

Why We Use Multi-Unit Abutments for Each and Every Case?

Multi-unit abutments are a modern prosthetic solution used in full-mouth implant rehabilitation. They are very different from traditional stock abutments.

Stock abutments are generally inexpensive and sometimes they are even supplied freely along with the implant system.

With stock abutments, the prosthetic teeth are usually cement-retained, meaning the teeth set is cemented over the abutment.

However, multi-unit abutments provide a much more advanced solution.

They allow the use of screw-retained crowns or screw-retained full-arch teeth sets.

This means the prosthesis can be retrieved if needed in the future.

If there is any damage, wear, or repair required in the coming years, the teeth set can be removed easily, repaired, and then fixed back again.

Because of this advantage, this system is also called a retrievable or repairable teeth set concept, or screw-retained fixed dentures.
